Green mattersIn September 2007, the Commission for Integrated Transport published a major Government report on carbon dioxide emissions from transport in the UK. The report highlighted that significant reductions in carbon dioxide are achievable in the freight sector through improved fuel efficiency, better utilisation of vehicles and driver training. Significantly the report did not advocate the use of the fuel duty escalator to achieve carbon dioxide savings. FTA welcomed the Commission's stance on fuel duty and supports members in their efforts to reduce their carbon impact. FTA has introduced and developed Carbonfta, a subscription service which focuses on operational actions to minimise emissions and a toolkit to enable operators to regularly monitor and report carbon dioxide emissions. During 2008, the Government also established the Energy and Climate Change Department to help tackle the twin challenges of energy security and climate change. The Climate Change Act introduced in December 2008 also commits the UK to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 against 1990 levels. The Committee on Climate Change has also been formed to direct Government on how to move the UK to a low carbon economy. All the above initiatives show that climate change is moving up the political agenda and the UK is likely to see increasing carbon policy measures which could affect logistics operations.
